Hot Rooms in an $850,000 Home!! Is Flex Duct to Blame?
Переглядів 1,2 тис.Місяць тому
Is rigid duct always better than flex duct? No! It is all about the install for both of these products. However, I am learning that when a builder chooses flex duct because they think the product can be cheaper, they usually also go with the cheapest bid for the installing contractors. This means that I see many more poorly installed flex duct systems than rigid duct systems. This very nice hou...

Avoid the Pain, Expense and Embarrassment of a Leaky Balcony - Do THIS Instead!

Early on in my career when I was working with Matt Risinger, I had the opportunity to help diagnose a leaky balcony on a very high end custom house on the lake. The original builder had chosen to lay a traditional tile floor over a sheet of poly for water protection. Unfortunately, the system failed and I got a good education on how not to waterproof a balcony. Matt also taught me about the bea...

can you cover retrofits of exterior insulation. Specifically pre 2000's. like 1980's-1990's stick frame hardy board (ish' 1980s'90's version of hardie board) residential. There are tons of these homes built and they are starting to get to the point where siding is needing to be replaced (30-40 years old if never replaced). Small (<2000 sqft) single story content is great, keep it up

Jordan, I enjoy keeping up with you. Seeing you doing helical Pier has sold me on our better foundation for our home build. My question to you is your thoughts on SIPs. Our plan is to do SIPs to answer and exceed everything you talked about. Maybe we can talk about a build in Hutto.

Well not sheeting the walls should be illegal where is the sheer value I did not even see any lateral bracing in them walls either them houses have no structurally value a wind storm can take that house down ..up here it is 100% illegal ... but that said better understanding the materials the Wrap ........House wrap is not meant to be completely waterproof or airtight because it needs to allow moisture and air to pass through. This prevents moisture buildup inside walls, which can cause mold and rot, and ensures proper ventilation, maintaining good indoor air quality. Its design strikes a balance between resisting water infiltration and allowing the building to breathe, which helps keep the structure dry, healthy, and energy-efficient. and man that widow Wrapping is 100% crap and BS they need to be Sued for that one .....but at the end of the day it comes down to your State and county Building code and to be honest in the the States most codes and standards are Sub Par and in my opinion Criminal

This is has got to be in a place that doesn't get very hot or very cold. Cuz I've no idea how you could have any kind of effective insulation with that. That's just insane to me. Then again, I live in an area that gets hot and humid in the summers and very cold in the winters (it usually gets down to about -20F for a few nights in January every year). Definitely not the most extreme climate in the US, but one where good insulation is a must!

How do you incorporate indirect natural light levels into the design. Shading is fairly easy if you know your angles and latitude, however Im trying to design spaces that get lots of indirect natural light in the southeast without using things like sun tunnels, just regular windows.

Getting worse. First home, I had pre-construction. I went by regularly from the time the slab was laid until the house was finished and brought my video camera everytime. So they built my first home properly. For my second current home, I made sure it was not a new build because the quality of these so-called new homes are not only garbage but might as well have used paper clips and stick figures 😂

Rigid duct is far superior to flexible duct. 1. Mice and other pests cannot chew through them 2. Static pressure is stable if designed properly 3. Noise is only present when poorly designed. Short of it if you want the best system run rigid trunk lines and 6' dampered flexible branch ducts. This is what my company specializes in. If you have in wall ducts or tite spaces this can be done by properly designing rectangle ducts with turning veins. Rigid ducts are much more expensive due to higher material and labor costs but you never have to worry about hot/cold rooms.

Apparently the oil companies do NOT have to lease the surface. They are not obligated to do anything for the land owner, and are entitled to gain “reasonable access” (or some kind of language) to explore and exploit the minerals. “Reasonable” may bot be well-defined, also. Most companies will offer to help though, from what I understand.

Today’s corporations over-engineer every thing to squeeze more money and profit. I know people who simply built their own AC from salvage parts and their ACs have worked and cooled better than my expensive Trane AC. Never again, I’m going to be like those Cuban guys who are still driving 1950s automobiles because of their mechanical aptitude 😂👍. Corporate greed is out-of-control. Let’s fight back.

Absolutely agree…plus when one system breaks down, they are easier to repair. Dehumidifier does one job…ac does one job…and heater coil does one job. Keep it simple and separate.

Jordan, I did this setup at my house I built a couple years ago and I 100% agree with this. I’m in GA where it’s hot and humid. I will do this setup at every house I ever build here going forward. Most comfortable house I have ever lived in! My house got a 2.0 ACH50 on my blower door and I didn’t even have weatherstripping on the doors (painters left night before and blower door guy showed up early before I could get them all back in) so I imagine with the weatherstripping installed I’m closer to 1.0. Our main systems are variable speed Trane, but sometimes they need the extra oomph of the Aprilaire dehu to keep the air dry in the house because of the humidity. I keep the dehumidifiers (one for the conditioned part of the house, and one in the unfinished basement) set at 49% RH. My ERV (fantech) runs 24/7 in “eco mode” where it runs at low speed all the time. We can keep the thermostat set at 74 during the day and it’s not stuffy at all, and we sleep with it at 71. At our old house (which was a 2014 build so pretty new) We had to keep the thermostat set at 72 during the day and 68 at night to stay comfortable.

This seams like a very crude understanding of Psychrometrics. Sure, it works; but having multiple pieces of equipment to do one relatively simple job seems very unelegant. With a fully modulating air handler you are pretty close to being able to load follow both the sensible and latent; if you already have a variable speed compressor and fan, all you need is a modulating reheat coil of some sort, and the sensors/controls to control it. A lot of commercial equipment can already do this.

Agreed. I'm planning unvented attic, stand alone ERV, and mini-splits. I will probably have a dedicated dehumidifier for cool days when the AC doesn’t kick on enough to dry out the air. How did you duct your standalone dehumidifier? Is it tied into the ERV or HVAC ducts, have its own separate ductwork, or does it just have a single (separate) supply and return?
